Associée aux malheurs du jeune Charles Dickens, la prison pour dette est souvent considérée comme une sanction implacable de la pauvreté, typique de l'Angleterre victorienne, alors qu'elle fut en France un moyen normal, sinon fréquent, de contraindre les endettés à satisfaire leurs créanciers jusqu'en 1867 et qu'elle reste de nos jours un moyen dont l'Etat use à l'égard de certains de ses débiteurs. Dans les geôles du roi, dès le XIVe siècle, on enfermait les débiteurs jusqu'au paiement de leurs dettes ou jusqu'à l'accomplissement de leurs obligations contractuelles. Pour la première fois, ce livre retrace avec précision les débuts de cette institution, entrée dans le droit royal en 1303, et, en se fondant sur les archives médiévales des tribunaux et prisons du Châtelet et du Parlement de Paris, rappelle sa genèse aux XIVe et XVe siècles. Comment pouvait-on faire arrêter son débiteur? Qui étaient ces prisonniers pour dette? Comment " tenaient-ils prison"? Comment en sortaient-ils? Dans quels termes cette fonction de coercition a-t-elle été conçue par les juristes et les magistrats? Telles sont les questions qui sous-tendent cette enquête sur l'entrée de l'emprisonnement pour dette dans le droit royal et la pratique judiciaire français. Jour après jour, la prise du corps des endettés a imposé la sujétion des débiteurs et des créanciers à leur roi, aussi sûrement que des contraintes et des peines extrêmes comme la question, les mutilations et la peine de mort. Appliqué d'abord aux laboureurs, aux ouvriers et aux artisans de l'Ile-de-France qu'il rappelait à la discipline du contrat, l'emprisonnement pour dette se situe à la croisée de l'histoire de la souveraineté de l'Etat et de celle de l'émergence de la " question sociale " à la fin du Moyen Age.

L'auteur, passionné de J.-P. Sartre, propose une lecture à travers la philosophie, l'histoire et la littérature pour aborder des questions fondamentales sur notre société d'aujourd'hui. Il nous raconte comment Sartre a pris conscience de l'engluement dans des héritages, à commencer par celui de la civilisation. Cette civilisation comme étant le logos, la parole, la logique, le discours écrit, la loi du monde, l'intelligence, la science, la rationalité, la raison.
Pour cela l'auteur nous fait voyager dans l'histoire depuis avec "la raison grecque" qui a procédé méthodiquement à une liquidation des dieux de l'Olympe, à une émancipation de la "raison mythologique", pour finalement s'imposer au fil des siècles, des millénaires comme Civilisation ou Raison. En effet de sa "naissance" à nos jours, la Raison ne sait faire que trois choses et rien d'autre : mater, formater, colmater la nature en l'homme et hors de l'homme.
Alors, Bassidiki Coulibaly fait dialoguer les grands penseurs entre eux autour de l'Occident qui file, sans frein ni marche arrière ; progrès, développement, croissance ! "Nous sommes embarqués", a écrit Pascal. "Serions-nous muets et cois comme des cailloux, notre passivité même serait une action", constate Sartre. Sartre a traversé le XXe siècle en choisissant d'incarner le personnage du fou de dame Raison.
Il a décidé en toute souveraineté, c'est-à-dire après s'être débarrassé des idoles héritées, d'affronter la Raison en retournant contre elle ses propres armes, en tout lieu et sans répit. Projet humaniste au sens de Térence, engagement planétaire que Sartre a mené par générosité, par amour, avec passion, avec l'intime conviction de l'"homme total", de l'"individu souverain" qui sait qu'il ne faut se fier qu'à sa propre raison car la Raison ne peut avoir raison que par la force et la mystification.
